Hub Assembly
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
The hub assembly (also called a wheel hub assembly, wheel bearing assembly, or hub unit) is an integrated unit containing the wheel bearing, hub flange (where the wheel bolts on), and in most modern applications, the ABS wheel speed sensor or tone ring. The hub assembly bolts to the steering knuckle and allows the wheel to rotate freely while supporting the vehicle’s weight and withstanding cornering, braking, and acceleration forces. Modern hub assemblies are sealed, pre-greased, and non-serviceable — when the bearing wears out, the entire assembly is replaced as a unit, unlike older vehicles where individual tapered roller bearings could be repacked with grease.
Worn hub assembly symptoms include a humming, growling, or rumbling noise that changes with vehicle speed (not engine RPM), increases during turns in one direction (loading the worn bearing), and vibration felt through the steering wheel or floor. Advanced wear causes ABS and traction control warning lights (because the integrated speed sensor signal becomes erratic as the bearing develops play). DIYers can check for bearing play by jacking up the wheel and rocking it at 12 and 6 o’clock (top and bottom) — any perceptible play indicates replacement. Spin the wheel by hand and feel for roughness or grinding. Hub assemblies should always be replaced with a new mounting bolt torqued to specification.
