Oil Reset (Oil Life Monitor Reset / Service Reset)
Oil Reset is the most commonly used scanner maintenance function, which resets the oil life monitoring system and service reminder indicator after performing an oil change. Modern vehicles use one of two oil life monitoring approaches: mileage/time-based systems that simply count down from a fixed interval (e.g., every 5,000 or 10,000 miles), and algorithm-based systems (like GM’s Oil Life System or BMW’s Condition Based Service) that calculate remaining oil life using a complex algorithm considering engine RPM, operating temperature, trip distance, ambient temperature, fuel consumption, and other factors. Algorithm-based systems can recommend oil change intervals anywhere from 3,000 to 15,000+ miles depending on actual driving conditions. If the oil life indicator isn’t reset after an oil change, it will continue counting down from the old change and display a premature or late service warning.
While many vehicles allow manual oil reset through a dashboard button combination (holding the trip reset button, cycling the ignition, etc.), some vehicles — particularly European models (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo, Land Rover) — require a scanner to reset the service indicator. These vehicles often have multiple service items tracked independently (oil, brakes, brake fluid, spark plugs, coolant, filters, transmission fluid), and the scanner allows you to reset each one individually as each service is performed. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II scanner’s Oil Reset function covers virtually all vehicle brands and is the most straightforward maintenance function to use — connect the scanner, navigate to Maintenance > Oil Reset, select your vehicle, and confirm the reset. The scanner communicates with the instrument cluster or ECU to zero the oil life counter and turn off the wrench icon, oil can symbol, or “Service Due” message. Some vehicles also require the scanner to input the type of oil used (conventional, synthetic blend, full synthetic) so the algorithm can adjust the next service interval calculation accordingly. Always reset the oil life monitor immediately after every oil change to maintain accurate service tracking.
