SAS
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
The SAS (Steering Angle Sensor) measures the steering wheel’s rotational angle and rate of rotation, telling the ESC, traction control, and lane-keeping systems which direction the front wheels are pointed relative to straight ahead. Located in the steering column, it provides the driver intent signal that ESC compares against actual vehicle movement. If the SAS zero-point is incorrect, ESC has a false baseline and may intervene inappropriately.
SAS calibration is required after wheel alignment (most common trigger), replacing steering components (rack, tie rods, column), collision repair, and SAS module replacement. Symptoms of uncalibrated SAS: ESC warning light, stability control activating during normal driving, off-center steering feel. On the YOUCANIC UCAN-II, calibrate with the vehicle on level ground, steering wheel centered, and front wheels straight. Some vehicles need a brief drive afterward to verify the new zero point.
