SOC

« Back to Glossary

📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

SOC (State of Charge) represents the current charge level of the vehicle’s battery as a percentage of its full capacity, similar to how a phone battery displays remaining charge. The vehicle’s power management system monitors SOC through the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) which measures battery voltage, current flow (both charging and discharging), and temperature. The ECU uses SOC data to manage alternator charging voltage, control start-stop functionality (disabling it when SOC is too low), manage electrical load shedding during high-demand periods, and determine if the battery has sufficient energy for the next engine start.

Monitoring SOC through the YOUCANIC UCAN-II live data helps diagnose charging system problems, parasitic drain issues, and battery degradation. A healthy fully-charged 12V lead-acid battery shows approximately 100% SOC at 12.6-12.8V resting voltage. SOC that drops rapidly with the engine off indicates parasitic drain. SOC that never reaches 100% during driving suggests alternator or charging circuit problems. On hybrid and electric vehicles, SOC refers to the high-voltage traction battery and is the primary indicator of driving range.

State of Charge, Battery Charge Level
