TCU
📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary
The TCU (Telematics Control Unit) is the vehicle’s built-in cellular communication module that enables connected car features including remote start/lock/unlock through a smartphone app, GPS-based vehicle tracking, automatic crash notification (eCall/SOS), stolen vehicle recovery, real-time traffic data for navigation, WiFi hotspot capability, and Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates. The TCU contains a cellular modem (4G/5G), GPS receiver, and connects to the vehicle’s CAN Bus network to send and receive commands and data. Subscription services like OnStar (GM), BMW ConnectedDrive, Mercedes me connect, and FordPass use the TCU for their connected features.
TCU problems include loss of cellular connectivity (cellular network changes, SIM card issues, antenna problems), GPS signal loss, app communication failures, and subscription authentication errors. Some TCU issues require module software updates or SIM card replacement. The YOUCANIC UCAN-II can read TCU module codes on supported vehicles. Note: the TCU is always connected to the CAN Bus and can potentially be a security vulnerability — keeping TCU firmware updated is important for cybersecurity.
