Honda Transmission by Model Year
Honda vehicles are known for their reliability and efficiency, and a significant factor in achieving this reputation is the quality of their transmissions. Over the years, Honda has manufactured a variety of transmissions for different models, engines, and years. Whether you’re a Honda owner looking to perform maintenance on your vehicle or a mechanic looking to diagnose a transmission issue, it is important to know what type of transmission your Honda is equipped with. Below, you will find a comprehensive list of Honda transmissions organized by year, model, and engine size to help you easily identify the transmission in your Honda vehicle and ensure you have the information you need to keep it running smoothly.
At a Glance
- Why the exact code matters: two Honda of the same year and engine can leave the factory with different transmissions. Fluid spec, filter, solenoids and valve body all differ between them, and the parts are not interchangeable.
- Where to find it on the car: the transmission case label, the VIN plate on the driver door jamb, and the underhood information label. Honda unit codes are typically a letter and number combination cast or stamped on the case.
- Fastest method: read the transmission identification directly from the transmission control module with a scan tool. That removes the guesswork entirely.
- The expensive mistake: Honda automatics require Honda ATF DW-1, which replaced Z1. Universal or multi vehicle ATF in a Honda automatic causes shudder in the torque converter lockup and is one of the most common causes of premature failure in these units. Honda CVTs require HCF-2 and nothing else.
- Typical fluid service cost: $150 to $350 at an independent shop, $250 to $500 at a Honda dealer.

You can also look up the transmission fitted to your car by VIN using a Honda VIN decoder tool, which is the most reliable method when a vehicle has been through several owners or has had work done.
Find the transmission code on the car itself
The table above covers what was normally fitted, but options, mid year changes and previous repairs mean the only certain answer comes from the vehicle. Honda prints the transmission code on the vehicle information label, usually found in the engine bay or on the driver’s door jamb alongside the paint code and the VIN. It appears as a short alphanumeric code such as BMXA, MDMA or SLXA for automatics.

Dealer level diagnostics at home with the YOUCANIC UCAN-II Pro.
- ✔ Covers most makes and models, including many luxury brands. Send us your VIN and we will confirm your car before you order
- ✔ Reads every module, not just the engine, so you find the faults a basic reader says are not there
- ✔ Commands the car: test a fan or pump, bleed ABS, retract an electronic parking brake, register a battery
- ✔ No subscriptions. Free lifetime updates, so the price you pay is the whole price
- ✔ Backed by real mechanics in the USA you can email before and after you buy

The code is also stamped or cast into the transmission casing itself, which is the final authority on a car that has had a replacement unit fitted at some point. If you are buying parts for a used Honda with unknown history, that stamping is worth finding before ordering anything, because a swapped transmission will not match what the VIN says should be there.
Never put the wrong fluid in a Honda transmission
This is the single most expensive mistake associated with identifying a Honda transmission, and it is why getting the type right matters beyond simple curiosity.
Honda conventional automatics take Honda ATF, currently sold as DW-1, which replaced the older Z1. Honda continuously variable transmissions take a completely different fluid, Honda HCF-2, which replaced HCF-1. These are not interchangeable in either direction. A CVT uses a steel belt or chain running between pulleys and depends on a fluid formulated to grip rather than to slip. Filling a CVT with automatic transmission fluid causes the belt to slip against the pulleys and destroys the unit, often within a few hundred miles, and the damage is not repairable by draining it out again.
Universal or multi vehicle fluids claiming to cover Honda applications are a false economy on either type. The transmission is one of the most expensive components on the car and the fluid is one of the cheapest, so buy the correct Honda specification.
Change the fluid even when nothing says to
Honda transmissions have a reputation for longevity that owes a great deal to fluid changes, and a surprising number of people never do one because no warning light ever asks for it. A drain and fill every thirty thousand miles or so, more often for towing or heavy stop start use, is among the cheapest insurance available on these cars.
Do a drain and fill rather than a pressure flush. Honda has consistently advised against power flushing its transmissions, and a drain and fill only exchanges part of the volume, so repeating it two or three times at short intervals is the usual approach on a neglected car. If the existing fluid is very dark and burnt smelling on a high mileage transmission that is already slipping, be aware that a change at that point sometimes precedes a failure rather than preventing one, simply because the transmission was already at the end of its life.
If the transmission is already misbehaving, read the codes before assuming the worst. Shift quality problems are often caused by a sensor, a solenoid or an outdated control module calibration rather than by internal wear, and a reflash is a fraction of the cost of a rebuild. A full system scanner that accesses the Honda transmission module will show the stored codes and live data that a generic reader cannot reach.
What This Repair Costs
| Repair | Typical total cost |
|---|---|
| Fluid and filter service, DIY | $70 to $180 |
| Fluid and filter service, independent shop | $180 to $400 |
| Fluid and filter service, dealer | $300 to $650 |
| Valve body or solenoid pack | $600 to $1,800 installed |
| Rebuild or replacement | $2,500 to $5,500 |
Rough US estimates for planning, not quotes. Prices vary widely by model, parts brand and region, so get a written quote before committing.
Buying the right parts starts with identifying the right unit. Every row above gets more expensive if the first step is a guess.
When to Stop and Hand It Over
- The unit is slipping, flaring or shuddering. Identify it, but do not expect a fluid change to cure mechanical wear.
- You find metal in the pan during a service.
- The car has no dipstick and the level must be set at a specific fluid temperature.
Reading the Transmission ID From the Car
VIN decoders and parts catalogues get this wrong often enough to cost people money, because mid year production changes are not always reflected. The car itself knows which unit it has, and the transmission control module will tell you.
The YOUCANIC UCAN-II Pro reads Honda transmission control module data including the unit identification and software version, along with transmission specific fault codes that a generic OBD2 reader cannot see. If you are about to order a valve body, a solenoid pack or a filter kit, confirming the unit first is worth the few minutes it takes.
Honda recommends drain and fill rather than a high pressure flush on most of these units. Three drain and fills spaced a few hundred miles apart replaces most of the fluid without disturbing deposits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the transmission code on a Honda?
It is stamped on a label on the transmission case, usually near the top or the front. A Honda dealer can also find it from your VIN.
Can I use universal ATF in my Honda?
Honda recommends its own fluids, such as ATF DW-1 for conventional automatics and HCF-2 for many CVTs. Universal fluids have been linked to shift problems in some Hondas.
Which Honda automatics had known problems?
Some early 2000s V6 Accord and Odyssey automatics had a reputation for failures. If you are buying an older Honda, check the service history for regular fluid changes.

hi there, does anyone know if a 2008 transmission will fit in a 2006 Honda Odyssey? same motor and everything, just different years.
