Need to open your Volvo hood to check the fluid level of the brakes, coolant, engine, and power steering? Learn how to open the hood by following the procedures below.
Procedure
- Open the driver’s door. If the car battery is dead, use the metal key inside your keyfob to unlock the driver’s door. If you need help with this step, follow these instructions on how to open a Volvo with a dead battery.
- Locate the hood release under the dashboard on the driver’s side.

- Go to the front of the hood and press on the hood latch by sliding your hand under the hood.
In some models, the latch is at the center front of the hood. In this Volvo XC60, the hood latch in the front corner of the hood near the driver’s headlight.
- Lift the hood and ensure that it will stay up on its own.
This applies to S60, V70, XC70, XC90, S40, V50, C30, C70, S80, and XC60.
