Why You Will Not Find YOUCANIC on Amazon

A question that often pops up in coversations with customers has to do with our presence on Amazon. While we have a few product available for purchase on Amazon, our flagship scanner, the UCAN-II-D pro, is nowhere to be seen! Why is that?

We have elected to keep the UCAN-II series of scanners off of most marketplace sites like Amazon and eBay because purchasing a scanner on these sites makes the scanner more expensive for buyers and inevitably results in a high number of returns because something does not work as expected and customers feel that they have no reliable way to contact us.

We prioritize clear communication and value our customers. Once you purchase a scanner, we don’t just leave you in the dust; we are available by phone or email to help with any troubleshooting or repair probelms you may be facing.

Being able to sell directly to customers allows us to keep our scanner at a reasonable price by eliminating high marketplace seller and storage fees, and, in our opinion, increases the likelihood a customer will reach out for assistance if something on their scanner isn’t working as expected.

YOUCANIC has been in the automotive repair business for years. We started our journey publishing diagnostic and repair guides to our website in 2015. We didn’t launch our first scanner until 2021!

Why we do not put our flagship scanner on Amazon

We tried going down the marketplace road before, and while we understand the appeal, a tool that already costs nearly $500 ended up costing almost $600, thanks to marketplace seller fees.

The fees come straight out of your pocket, not ours

Amazon takes a referral fee on every sale, then fulfillment fees, then storage fees. On top of that, it is nearly impossible to get sales without paying more to have the product sponsored, which, in an overcrowded scanner market like scan tools, might not change anything regarding sales. Add up all these extra fees, and you’re looking at well over a hundred dollars per unit, which is built into the final price for the product. As a company trying to save you as much money on repairs as possible, we simply can’t justify these extra charges.

Amazon puts a wall between you and us

While Amazon’s message center allows customers and storefronts to connect and resolve order-related issues, when a customer contacts our primary helpdesk for scanner support, it can be difficult to verify a scanner purchase and provide needed support. If you need technical support and message our team through Amazon, you will likely have to wait a day for us to get back to you, which isn’t convenient when you’re in the middle of a major repair, and your car is partially disassembled!

A diagnostic scanner is not a phone case. People need help with it. Buying direct means when you call or email in, you get to talk to us directly, not some third-party help center.

Counterfeits and grey market sellers

Marketplaces are where cloned tools and unauthorized resellers thrive. Once a product is listed, other sellers attach to it, ship you something that may or may not be genuine, and the brand spends its days filing takedowns instead of improving the product. Selling direct guarantees that every unit in circulation came from us, has a serial we recognize, and gets updates and warranty coverage without jumping through hoops.

Race to the bottom

On Amazon, the cheapest products win. That pressure is why so many scan tools are rebranded versions of the same generic hardware with a different logo slapped on. We are not interested in competing on how cheaply we can create and distribute something. We compete on coverage, on updates that keep coming years later, and on someone picking up the phone. Quality comes first.

What buying direct actually gets you

A Note About Some Listings you may find

We do offer a small selection of tools on marketplace sites, like our battery tester and virtual dashboard. These smaller, items are more straightforward and easy to use compared to our UCAN-II scanners; therefore, we aren’t as concerned about customer complaints or regular support requests. Our current full system scanners, including the UCAN-II-D Pro, the UCAN-HD-A heavy-duty scanner, and our DoIP and adapter accessories, are sold direct only.

We are not only a scan tool company

This is the part most brands cannot say. YOUCANIC started as a free repair resource, and it still is one over ten years later. We publish repair guides and film how-to videos because the goal is to help you break free of dealership dependency, whether or not you ever buy a scanner from us.

All that said, we are a small team doing the best with what we’ve got. We do not have a guide for every car and every job. Our coverage is deepest on European makes and more broad across the rest, but we ae constantly updating our repair resources. If we have not covered your vehicle yet, let our team know and we will try our hardest to make sure it goes on our list.

The scanner exists because just having the guides wasn’t enough. Modern cars are rolling computers, so a full-system scanner is nessecary for any DIY or home mechanic. following a repair guide can be helpful, but without a good tool, you can’t look for trouble codes, run a bidirectional test or run an adaptation or reset that is almost nessecary after replacing parts in your car.
