⌂ » Vehicles » Chrysler

Posted onAug 27, 2018Oct 6, 2022 Updated onOct 6, 2022

Several 2017, 2018, and 2019 Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep, and Ram models have been recalled due to a problem with the voltage regulator chip in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) that can cause the engine to stall. Details about this recall can be found on the National Highway Administration Website Recall 18V524000.

Symptoms

  • Engine Stalls
  • The car will not start.
  • The engine starts and then shuts off immediately.
  • The engine loses power then dies.

Problem

This problem is caused by a defective chip in the powertrain controller. Once the chip fails, the powertrain module stops working, causing the vehicle to not start or stall while driving.

The typical fix for this problem is to replace the PCM module. It is possible to troubleshoot the PCM and replace the failed chip, but this solution is less likely to be performed by your mechanic or dealer.

Instead, a new or used PCM module is typically installed.

Solution

Chrysler dealers will replace the powertrain control module free of charge. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler’s number for this recall is U87.

If your vehicle is not covered by the warranty, such as salvage vehicles, you will need to replace the PCM module and program it to your vehicle. A new or used Chrysler PCM Module can be purchased online.
