ADAS

« Back to Glossary

📖 YOUCANIC Automotive Glossary

ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) is the collective term for electronic safety technologies that use cameras, radar, lidar, and ultrasonic sensors to assist the driver in avoiding collisions, staying in lane, and navigating traffic. Common ADAS features include adaptive cruise control (ACC), automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning (LDW), lane keep assist (LKA), blind spot monitoring (BSM), rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA), forward collision warning (FCW), pedestrian detection, traffic sign recognition, and parking assist. These systems rely on precisely calibrated sensors — even minor windshield replacement, bumper repair, or alignment changes can require ADAS recalibration.

ADAS calibration is performed using static calibration (positioning targets at precise distances in a controlled environment) or dynamic calibration (driving at specific speeds on well-marked roads). The YOUCANIC UCAN-II can read ADAS module DTCs and may support certain ADAS reset functions. When ADAS warning lights illuminate, scanning the specific modules reveals whether the issue is a sensor fault, calibration loss, or a blocked sensor (dirt, ice, or sticker covering a camera or radar unit). ADAS repairs increasingly require scanner access for recalibration after even minor collision repairs.
