Time

30-45 minutes

A faulty Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) can cause engine performance issues and trigger warning lights. This guide helps you diagnose and replace your MAF sensor to restore proper engine operation.

Common Fault Codes

Use an OBD-II scanner to check for these codes:

  • P0100: Mass Air Flow Circuit Malfunction
  • P0101: Mass Air Flow Sensor Range/Performance
  • P0102: Mass Air Flow Circuit Low Input
  • P0103: Mass Air Flow Circuit High Input
  • P0104: Mass Air Flow Circuit Intermittent

Tools Needed

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • T20 Torx screwdriver
  • Mass airflow sensor – part number 31430000

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Find and pull the hood release handle under the dashboard on the driver’s side. The release handle is marked with a hood symbol. Image Of The Lever Inside The Car Used To Release The Hood.
  2. Walk to the front of your vehicle and find the hood safety latch under the hood’s front edge. Push the latch to the side to fully release the hood. Hood Latch At Front
  3. Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues. In the 2016-2025 Volvo XC90, the battery is located in the trunk on the left side. Negative Battery Terminal
    • Go to the back of your car and open the trunk.
    • Lift the trunk floor and remove two panels on the left to reveal the battery. 20250118 170035 Scaled - 2016-2025 Volvo Xc90 - How To Replace The Mass Airflow Sensor

  4. Locate the MAF sensor in your engine bay. Engine Bay Overview
  5. Access the air filter housing where the MAF sensor is mounted. Remove the engine air filter if needed for better access.
  6. Carefully disconnect the wiring harness from the MAF sensor and remove the sensor using a torx screwdriver. 20250115 093253 Scaled - 2016-2025 Volvo Xc90 - How To Replace The Mass Airflow Sensor
  7. Install the new MAF sensor, and be careful not to touch the sensors because fingerprints may cause the sensor not to work properly. Note: Instead of buying a new MAF sensor, try cleaning your sensor with a can of Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner. If cleaning it does not work, then you can replace the sensor.
  8. Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery.
  9. Clear trouble codes using your scanner at the OBD-II port Obd-Ii Port Location.

Warning Signs

Dashboard

The following are common warning signs that the MAF sensor on your vehicle may be faulty.

  • Check the engine light on the dashboard.
  • Notable engine performance issues.
  • Poor fuel economy.
  • The vehicle has a rough idle.
