On Toyota vehicles equipped with OBD-I, you can read the fault codes without the help of a diagnostic tool. Unfortunately, this procedure only works on 1995 and older Toyota vehicles.

Procedure

  1. Park vehicle and set the emergency brakes. Park Toyota read fault codes

     

  2. Turn key to position II. All dash lights should be ON. Do not start the engine. Turn on igntion to read Toyota check engine codes without a scanner

     

  3. Pull the hood release and open the hood. Open hood to locate diagnositc port and read toyota engine codes without a scanner

     

  4. Locate the diagnostic port in the engine bay. This is known as Diagnosis Connector 1 or DLC1. Port used to read Toyota codes without a scanner

     

  5. Use a copper wire or paper clip to short terminals TE1 and E1.
  6. Go back inside the car and count the number of flashes for the check engine light. 

This procedure will not work on Toyota vehicles equipped with OBD-II. For most 2000 and newer vehicles, you will need a code reader to read check engine fault codes.
