A faulty Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) can cause engine performance issues and trigger warning lights. This guide helps you diagnose and replace your MAF sensor to restore proper engine operation.
Common Fault Codes
Use an OBD-II scanner to check for these codes:
- P0100: Mass Air Flow Circuit Malfunction
- P0101: Mass Air Flow Sensor Range/Performance
- P0102: Mass Air Flow Circuit Low Input
- P0103: Mass Air Flow Circuit High Input
- P0104: Mass Air Flow Circuit Intermittent
Tools Needed
- Flathead screwdriver
- T20 Torx screwdriver
- Mass airflow sensor – Part number 30405-05990739
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Find and pull the hood release handle under the dashboard on the driver’s side. The release handle is marked with a hood symbol.

- Walk to the front of your vehicle and find the hood safety latch under the hood’s front edge. Push the latch to the side to fully release the hood.

- Find and pull out the hood prop rod to keep the hood open.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical issues. In the 2008-2017 Volvo XC60, the battery can be found in the engine bay towards the back.
- Remove the battery cover and rubber molding.
- Remove the negative (Black) connector from the terminal.
⚠️Warning: If the battery terminals look corroded, wear gloves when handling the connectors, and clean the terminals to optimize battery performance and connection.
(2015 Volvo XC60 Owner’s Manual, 360).
- Locate the MAF sensor in your engine bay.

- Access the air filter housing where the MAF sensor is mounted. Remove the engine air filter if needed for better access.
- Carefully disconnect the wiring harness from the MAF sensor and remove the sensor using a torx screwdriver.
- Install the new MAF sensor, and be careful not to touch the sensors because fingerprints may cause the sensor not to work properly. Verify that the proper orientation matches the airflow direction indicated on the engine bay layout.

Note: Instead of buying a new MAF sensor, try cleaning your sensor with a can of Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner. If cleaning it does not work, then you can replace the sensor.
- Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery.
- Clear trouble codes using your scanner at the OBD-II port
.
Warning Signs
The following are common warning signs that the MAF sensor on your vehicle may be faulty.
- Check the engine light on the dashboard.
- Notable engine performance issues.
- Poor fuel economy.
- The vehicle has a rough idle.
- Difficulty starting the vehicle in the morning.
Verification Steps
- Start the engine and check the dashboard.
- Monitor the instrument cluster.
- Verify no warning lights remain.
- Check the engine performance.
- Clear any remaining codes using an OBD-II scanner.
Preventive Maintenance
- Regular air filter inspection. Replace the engine air filter every 10,000 miles.
- Check air filter housing for damage and leaves.
- Scan for pending codes regularly.
- Document service dates.
Important Notes
- Never clean a sensor with improper chemicals.
- Ensure proper connector seating.
- Follow torque specifications.
- Clear all codes after replacement.
- Verify proper operation.
