Mazda Check Automatic Transmission Fluid Level
Do you need to check the transmission fluid in your Mazda? This guide provides a step-by-step procedure for checking the transmission fluid level in a Mazda vehicle.
Symptoms
If the Mazda transmission fluid level is low, you may experience shifting problems such as:
- Transmission slipping
- Delayed shifting
- Hard shifting
- Transmission doesn’t shift
- Overheated transmission
How to check Mazda automatic transmission fluid level
- Warm-up transmission. Drive your vehicle for at least ten minutes. This will allow your Mazda transmission fluid to warm up. If the vehicle does not move or the transmission slips, do not drive, or you risk damaging the transmission.
- Ensure the Mazda is parked on a level surface. The parking brake should be set to shift in Park.
- Do not turn off the engine. Allow the engine to idle.

- Open the hood. Pull the hood release under the dashboard on the driver’s side.
- Locate the transmission dipstick at the back of the engine.
- While the engine is idling, pull out the dipstick. Clean the dipstick and reinsert it.

- Pull the dipstick. Ensure the Mazda transmission fluid level is between the Full and Low-level marks.
- If the level is below the minimum mark, add half a quart/litter via the same tube you used to check the level. Only use the recommended Mazda transmission fluid mentioned in your owner’s manual. You will need a funnel for this. Recheck the level.
- Recheck the transmission fluid level. Add more automatic transmission fluid if necessary, but do not overfill above the Max / Full mark.
Your owner’s manual outlines the procedure for checking your Mazda transmission fluid level. Newer Mazda vehicles often do not have a transmission dipstick. The transmission fluid level is checked via the fill hole in those models.

How to add automatic transmission fluid to a Mazda
Adding transmission fluid to a Mazda is simple. Use the recommended Mazda automatic transmission fluid or a compatible alternative.
- Park the Mazda. Set the parking brakes. Move the shifter to the Park position.
- Open the hood.
- Remove the dipstick. The automatic transmission dipstick is located next to the battery.
- Use a funnel to insert it into the dipstick tube.
- Add half a quart of Mazda Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).
- Recheck the fluid level.
- You are done if the level is above the Min mark and below the dipstick’s Max mark. If it is below, add more fluid. You must remove the extra fluid or risk damaging the automatic transmission if it is above the Max mark.
Recommended Mazda Transmission Fluid
The most common transmission fluid used in Mazda is Mazda MV ATF. A few alternative transmission fluids that are compatible with Mazda MV ATF are:
- AMSOIL Synthetic ATF
- Mobil1 Synthetic ATF
- Valvoline Maxlife Multi-Vehicle ATF
- Schaeffers
- REDLINE D4 ATF on eBay
- Nippon Oil Eneos ATF Fluid
Always check with your owner’s manual to verify the correct type of transmission fluid used in your Mazda.
Mazda recommends Mazda ATF MV transmission fluid (also referred to as M5 ATF or Mazda V). Mazda MV ATF is not the same as Mercon V or Dexron automatic transmission fluid, which is a common misconception. Don’t use Mercon or Dexron transmission fluid on a Mazda; you will start experiencing shifting problems after a few months.
