Honda Paint Code Location
All Honda vehicles have a unique paint code that determines their color. The paint code is printed on a sticker in the driver’s door jamb and can be used to order touch-up paint to fix scratches.
At a Glance
- Location: the service tag sticker on the driver’s door jamb, at the bottom of the label.
- Format: letters and numbers, such as NH731P for Crystal Black Pearl.
- Not there: check the firewall in the engine bay.
- The paint code is not in the VIN; a Honda dealer can look it up from your VIN.
- Order touch up paint by code, not by color name, since names repeat across shades.
Honda Paint Code Location / Sticker

The Honda paint code is in the Service Tag on the driver’s side door jamb. The service tag contains the VIN and color code (e.g., NH-797M). The paint code is at the bottom of the sticker, as shown in the picture. The code has letters and numbers. This is the factory paint code.
If you can access your Honda, the simplest way to find the exterior body paint code is to look it up on the sticker found on the door frame.

Find Honda Paint Code by VIN
The paint code is not encoded in the VIN itself. The VIN identifies the car, and the dealer or manufacturer looks the original color up against it in their build records, which is why you have to ask rather than decode it yourself. Online VIN lookup tools that claim to return a paint color are doing the same lookup against a database, and the result is only as good as that database.
You can also get a Honda paint code from the dealer.
- Locate a Honda dealer. The dealer doesn’t have to be near you; you don’t have to have taken the car there before.
- Give the dealer the VIN and ask them to check the paint code.

Where to buy Honda touch-up paint?
You must know the paint code if you are looking for touch-up paint for your Honda. You can use the code to buy touch-up paint online or from your Honda dealer.
How to read a Honda paint code
Honda codes are built from a letter prefix, a number and sometimes a suffix. The prefix identifies the color family: NH covers the neutral whites, greys and blacks, B is blue, R is red, G is green, Y is yellow and YR covers the beiges, browns and oranges. A trailing M generally indicates a metallic finish and a P a pearl, which matters because pearls are usually sprayed in three stages and are much harder to touch in by hand than a plain solid color.
Copy the code exactly, including the hyphen and any suffix. NH-700M and NH-797M are both silvers and look near enough identical on a screen, but they will not match on a door.
Matching paint on a car that is no longer new
A paint code matches the color your Honda left the factory with, not the color it is today. Ten years of sun will shift a red or a dark blue noticeably, so a perfectly correct touch up can still look wrong against the surrounding panel. Body shops deal with this by blending the new paint out into the adjacent area rather than stopping at the edge of the repair.
For a chip or a scratch you are fixing yourself, test the paint somewhere it will not show, such as the inside of the fuel filler flap or the lower edge of a door, and let it dry fully before judging the match. Wet paint is a different color from cured paint. Build the repair up in thin coats rather than one thick one, and leave it slightly proud so it can be leveled once it has hardened.
If the car has already been repainted at some point, the sticker is no longer a reliable guide. A body shop can read the actual panel with a spectrophotometer and mix to that instead.
How to Apply Touch Up Paint
- Wash the area and remove wax with isopropyl alcohol so the paint sticks.
- Shake the touch up paint well and test it on a hidden spot or a piece of card first.
- Apply thin layers with a fine brush or toothpick, letting each layer dry, until the chip is level with the surrounding paint.
- Finish with clear coat if your paint is a basecoat and clear system, which most modern Hondas are.
- Wear gloves and work in a ventilated area away from sparks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Honda paint code in the VIN?
No. The VIN does not contain the color, but a Honda dealer or parts counter can look up the original color from your VIN.
What does the P or M at the end of a Honda paint code mean?
It usually describes the finish, such as P for pearl and M for metallic. Always order using the full code, for example NH731P.
Will touch up paint match perfectly?
On a fresh chip it is usually close, but sun faded paint can look slightly different. Small chips blend well; larger areas are best left to a body shop.
