Use the check digit to spot a bad VIN

Position nine is a check digit calculated from the other sixteen characters, which means a genuine VIN cannot carry an arbitrary value there. A number that fails the check has been mistyped or invented. VINs also never use the letters I, O or Q, precisely so they cannot be confused with one, zero and nine, so seeing one of those means a misread digit rather than an unusual car.

Check the number on the car, in two places

On a Mitsubishi the VIN appears on the plate visible through the windshield on the driver side, on a label in the driver door opening and stamped into the body under the hood. Compare at least two against each other and against the paperwork. Numbers that disagree, or a plate that looks disturbed, are reason enough to walk away from a purchase.

Before buying, run a history report for accident and title records, check for open recalls free of charge on the manufacturer or NHTSA site, and plug in a scan tool.
