Eventually, keyless remote batteries die just like any battery. You may be stranded in such an event. But did you know that there is manual entry into modern vehicles, and they can still be started even with a dead key fob? This guide shows how to unlock a 2019 Mitsubishi with a dead keyless remote or dead battery.

Keep on reading to find out how to use your dead key fob to open your vehicle in case of an emergency.

Symptoms

Common causes of a bad key fob/keyless entry remote:

  • The battery in the remote has died
  • The remote has failed, oftentimes due to wear or moisture
  • The fuse in the vehicle for the remote system has blown
  • The keyless entry system module or wiring has failed or malfunctioned

Procedure

  1. On the back of the key fob, a tab can be pushed to release the metal key from it. Push this tab and pull the metal key out of the plastic casing.
  2. Use the metal key to unlock the driver’s side door of the vehicle.
  3. Insert the metal key back into the fob.
  4. Locate the hole for inserting the fob on the lower part of the center of the dash. Insert the key fob into this hole, and the vehicle can be started even with a dead battery in the key fob.
  5. Use the push to start as you normally would while keeping the key fob in the socket.
  6. If the vehicle battery is dead, use a jump starter to start the vehicle; refer to this guide.
  7. Replace the malfunctioning key fob or key fob battery. You are all done!

I replaced my key fob. Do I need to have it programmed at the dealer?

The short answer is yes, a new remote will need to be reprogrammed. Usually, due to restrictions on the software used for reprogramming these vehicles’ computers, the car will also have to be taken to a dealer. However, aftermarket software and professional tools may be able to perform these functions.
