Procedure

  1. Pull the trunk release under the dashboard to open the trunk.The trunk release of the 2016 Mazda 3.

  2. Remove the push clips on the trunk shield behind the outer tail light assembly.Removing the push clips on the trunk shield.
  3. Pull the trunk shield down to access the back of the outer tail light assembly.Pulling the trunk shield down to have access to the connectors and bolts on the outer tail light assembly.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors of the outer tail light assembly by pushing the clip and pulling the connector out.Disconnecting the electrical connectors of the outer tail light assembly.
  5. Remove the three 10mm bolts using a 10mm nut driver or a socket wrench and twist it counterclockwise.Loosening the 10mm bolts holding the outer tail light assembly.

  6. Pull the outer tail light assembly out from the vehicle.Pulling the outer tail light assembly out of the vehicle.

  7. Line up the new outer tail light assembly and push it in to lock it into place.Installing the new outer tail light assembly.
  8. Reinstall the 10mm bolts and twist them clockwise to tighten.Reinstalling the 10mm bolts holding the outer tail light assembly.
  9. Reconnect the electrical connectors by pushing them back to the connection port.Reconnecting the electrical connectors of the outer tail light assembly.
  10. Line up the trunk shield back to its original orientation and reinstall the push clips.Putting the trunk shield back to its original orientation.
