2021 Silverado 6.6L Duramax Cold Start Whistle – Diagnosis & Fix
Customer Complaint
A customer brought in their 2021 Silverado 6.6L Duramax complaining about a high-pitched whistle during cold starts, most noticeable under moderate to heavy throttle at low speeds. They had previously taken the truck to another shop, but no one was able to identify the source of the noise. With no warning lights or performance issues, the problem was easy to overlook, but the customer knew something wasn’t right. Determined to get answers, they brought the vehicle to us for a more in-depth diagnosis.
Diagnosis
I test-drove the vehicle and noticed a high-pitched whistle from the engine when cold. This noise can be duplicated at lower speeds under moderate to heavy throttle application.
Initial Diagnostic Scan

- Connected the scan tool and scanned the vehicle. No fault codes found.
Charge Air System Inspection
Inspect the Charge Air system for loose clamps, torn boots, or damaged components. No visible damage was found. Install a smoke generator at the intake air temperature sensor port and pump smoke into the intake and charge air system. Inspect all pipes and hoses for smoke escaping. The intake system on the charge air side is intact and operating as designed.

Exhaust System Inspection

Next, inspect the exhaust system for leaks, loose or missing fasteners, and damaged components. Soot buildup is present on the driver side heat shield for the turbo inlet pipe. Gain access to the heat shield and remove it, and inspect and verify the soot buildup.
Smoke Test and Leak Location

Install a smoke generator in the exhaust system at the tailpipe and inspect the system for smoke escaping. We found smoke leaking from the left driver-side turbo inlet pipe at the flex portion of the pipe. Below is a close-up of the cracked flex pipe where the leak was happening.

Repair Recommendation
Once I removed the turbo inlet pipe and inspected the crank found in it near the flex portion of the pipe, it was time to fix the issue. To fix the problem I had to replace the pipe and related gaskets/hardware. See the pictures below from the repair.

I test-drove the vehicle after replacing both left and right-side turbo inlet pipes and gaskets, and found that the noise is no longer present. This issue did not cause any driveability or performance concerns; however, the leak was small. I would suspect a larger leak may result in a loss of boost pressure and/or loss of power, with possible check engine light and codes.

In this case, a cracked turbo inlet pipe was the culprit behind the cold start whistle on this 2021 Silverado 6.6L Duramax.

After replacing the damaged pipe and gaskets, the noise was gone. While this particular issue didn’t trigger any fault codes or performance concerns, a larger leak could lead to a loss of boost pressure, reduced power, or even a check engine light. If you own a Silverado HD or GMC Sierra HD with the 6.6L Duramax engine, particularly from model years 2020 and up, and notice a similar high-pitched whistle when the engine is cold, it is worth having the charge air and exhaust systems thoroughly inspected. Early detection can prevent future drivability issues and costly repairs.
