Customer Complaint
A customer brought in their 2021 Silverado 6.6L Duramax complaining about a high-pitched whistle during cold starts, most noticeable under moderate to heavy throttle at low speeds. They had previously taken the truck to another shop, but no one was able to identify the source of the noise. With no warning lights or performance issues, the problem was easy to overlook, but the customer knew something wasn’t right. Determined to get answers, they brought the vehicle to us for a more in-depth diagnosis.
Diagnosis
I test-drove the vehicle and noticed a high-pitched whistle from the engine when cold. This noise can be duplicated at lower speeds under moderate to heavy throttle application.
Initial Diagnostic Scan
Connected the scan tool and scanned the vehicle. No fault codes found.

Install a smoke generator at the intake air temperature sensor port and pump smoke into the intake and charge air system. Inspect all pipes and hoses for smoke escaping. The intake system on the charge air side is intact and operating as designed.

Repair Recommendation
Once I removed the turbo inlet pipe and inspected the crank found in it near the flex portion of the pipe, it was time to fix the issue. To fix the problem…
