2013-2020 Ford Fusion Spark Plugs & Ignition Coil Replacement

Is your Ford Fusion engine idle rough, misfiring, and the check engine light on due to a faulty spark plug and ignition coil? This guide is a step-by-step procedure on how to replace spark plugs & ignition coils on a Ford Fusion 2013-2020 2.5L engine.


What you will need

  • Spark plug socket wrench
  • 8mm socket wrench
  • Magnet Pick-Up Tool
  • Ford Fusion spark plugs
    • Iridium or Platinum
    • Gap: 0.052″
  • Ford Fusion ignition coil

Procedure

  1. Open the hood. See the step-by-step procedure on how to open the hood.


Remove the engine cover by pulling it up.

Disconnect the electrical connector of the ignition coil by pressing the clip and pulling the connector out.

Remove the 8mm bolt on the ignition coil using an 8mm socket wrench.Removing the 8mm bolt on the ignition coil.


Pull the ignition coil out from the vehicle.Removing the ignition coil of the Ford Fusion.


Loosen the spark plugs by using a spark plug socket wrench and twisting it counterclockwise.Loosening the spark plug using a spark plug socket wrench.


Pull the spark plug out using a spark plug socket. A magnetic pickup tool may be needed to lift up the spark plug. Removing the spark plug of the Ford Fusion.


Place the new spark plug into the spark plug socket wrench or to the magnet and use the spark plug socket wrench or magnet to install the new spark plug into the vehicle. Do not allow the spark plug to drop in the hole as the tip of the spark plug may bend. Installing the new spark plug of the vehicle.This prevents the spark plugs from dropping down and damaging the gap.


Tighten the spark plug to correct torque specification.Tightening the spark plug of the Ford Fusion.


Place the ignition coil back into each coil.Installing the new ignition coil of the Ford Fusion.


Reinstall the 8mm bolt on the ignition coil.Reinstalling the 8mm bolt on the ignition coil.


Reconnect the electrical connector of the ignition coil.Reconnecting the electrical connector of the ignition coil.


Line up the engine cover back to the vehicle and push it in to set it into place.

Check Engine Light On

Spark Plug Gap

Ford Fusion uses iridium or platinum spark plugs. Spark plugs come pre-gapped at 0.052.”
