Is your Mitsubishi Outlander gas mileage decreased, power loss, and has a rough idle due to a faulty engine air filter? Learn how to fix the problem by replacing the engine air filter of your Mitsubishi. In this guide, you will find instructions, pictures, and a video to help you learn how to change the engine air filter on a Mitsubishi Outlander.
We strongly recommend taking out the housing to replace the air filter. Trying to pull the filter out without taking out the housing is possible but installing the new air filter correctly is harder with the housing still in the car.

The Mitsubishi airbox contains an air filter that protects the engine from ingesting dirt; when the airbox is damaged, dirt would be sucked into the intake and scratches the cylinders resulting in pre-mature engine wear. A damaged airbox could also result in extra air bypassing the MAF sensor, which may cause high rpm at idle. The airbox should be checked annually for damage to avoid the above-mentioned situations.
What does the mass airflow sensor do?
- Mass (air) flow sensors (MAF) measure the flow rate of air entering a fuel-injected internal combustion engine. The air mass information is needed for the engine control unit (ECU) to balance and deliver the correct fuel mass to the engine.
When often do you need to replace the air filter on a Mitsubishi?
- Mitsubishi recommends replacing your engine air filter every 30,000 miles or twenty-four months under normal driving conditions. We recommend inspecting your filter every 15,000 miles or twelve months if your vehicle is driven under severe conditions.
