Need to bleed the brake line of your Toyota Camry? This guide is a step-by-step procedure for bleeding air from the brake line or caliper on a 2012-2017 Toyota Camry XV50. Follow the procedures below to learn how to bleed the brake line of your vehicle.
What you will need
- Tire rod or breaker bar
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- 8mm wrench
- Clear hose
- Container
- Brake fluid
Procedure
- Open the hood. Pull the hood release under the dashboard. Unlock the hood latch and pull the hood up until the hood struts keep the hood open.
- Locate the brake fluid reservoir on the driver’s side of the engine compartment near the firewall.
- Open the cap of the reservoir by twisting it counterclockwise.
- Loosen the lug nuts of the front and rear wheels using a tire rod or breaker bar.
- Jack up the vehicle on the front and back. Place jack stands on the car frame to support the vehicle.
- Remove the wheels from the vehicle. Locate the bleeder valve on the back of the brake caliper.
- The bleeder valve is located on the rear-wheel passenger side, rear-wheel driver side, and front-wheel passenger side.
- Remove the cover of the bleeder valve by pulling it up.
- Get the 9mm wrench and place it on the bleeder valve.
- Get the clear hose and connect it to the bleeder valve. Allow the hose to discharge on a bottle or container.
- Let someone start the vehicle and press the brakes a few times. Then keep the brakes pressed. Once the brake pedal is kept pressed, loosen the bleeder valve by twisting it counterclockwise to let the air and brake fluid out.
- Bleeding the air on the rear passenger side brake caliper. Tighten the bleeder valve by twisting it clockwise. Pump the brake pedal a few times. Then loosen it again while the brake pedal is kept pressed.
- Tighten the bleeder valve and repeat procedures 10 to 13 again until there’s no air coming out on the brake caliper.
- Remove the wrench and the hose from the bleeder valve and reinstall the cover of the bleeder valve by simply pushing it in.
- Repeat procedure for other brake caliper. Continue with the caliper furthest from the driver.
- Continue bleeding the air on the rear driver-side brake caliper.
- Continue bleeding the air on the front passenger side brake caliper.
- Once all the air is removed, reinstall the wheels back to the vehicle.
- Check the brake fluid reservoir and add brake fluid if needed. Only add the brake fluid type noted on the top of the brake fluid reservoir. Most likely, your vehicle may require DOT3, DOT4 or DOT5.1
- Restart the engine, pump the brakes a few times and make sure they work properly.
