What causes the Audi airbag light to come on?
The most common problems that trigger the Audi airbag lights are a faulty clock spring or a bad passenger occupancy sensor.
Here is the list of the most likely issues that will trigger the airbag / SRS warnings on an Audi:
- Faulty clock spring.
- Low battery voltage
- Dead battery
- A defective passenger weight sensor
- Accident
- Blown airbag
- Blow seat belt pre-tensioner
You must retrieve the airbag fault codes to determine why the Audi airbag light is on. While a generic OBD2 scanner will show no codes, an Audi airbag scanner can access your airbag codes.
The YOUCANIC Full System Scanner can read and clear fault codes through every vehicle’s control module.
How to Reset Audi Airbag Light
What you will need
Make sure to get a scanner that can read Audi codes. OBD-II scanners that only support the engine module will not show fault airbag codes. The scanner needs to support the airbag module.
The YOUCANIC Full System Scanner can read and clear fault codes through every vehicle’s control module.
- Locate the OBD-II port. Under your Audi dashboard, you will find the Onboard Diagnostic port, also known as the OBD-II port. All 1996 and newer Audi vehicles have this port.
- Plug the OBD2 scanner into the 16-pin OBD2 port. Note that the port is trapezoid-shaped and allows the scanner to plug in only one direction.
-
Turn on the ignition. Do not start the engine. If the Audi has a START/STOP button, press this button without pressing the brake pedal.
Turn on the scanner. Allow your Audi airbag scanner to power on. The scanner should turn on once the ignition is turned on or to position II. Once the scanner is fully powered on, select Audi from the menu.
- Read Airbag Fault Codes. Follow the prompting on the diagnostic scanner to select Audi. Next, manually select the AIRBAG SYSTEM. Scroll down to read codes and scan Audi for airbag fault codes. You will need to fix the problem if the codes you retrieve are present. If the code’s status is STORED, it is ok to clear the code and determine if it returns after the vehicle restart.
What is the Best Audi Airbag Reset Tool?
To read and reset the Audi airbag light and codes from the Airbag module, you will need a scanner to access the Audi airbag module. The YOUCANIC Full System Scanner can read and reset all control modules on an Audi vehicle.
Why won’t the airbag light reset on an Audi?
You will not be able to reset your Audi airbag light with a generic scanner. You need a scanner that is capable of diagnosing the Audi airbag system. Also, any damaged sensors and blown airbags need to be replaced. No-fault codes can be present in the airbag module.
If you get into an accident, even if the accident is minor, the airbag light may come on. You can read the codes, but in most cases, you will not clear the codes if any of the airbags or seat belt restraints are deployed.
You may be unable to reset the airbag light even after replacing the deployed parts. Most mechanics and dealerships suggest that you replace the airbag module, which is expensive. Instead, you can use third-party companies to repair your existing airbag module.
You will remove the airbag module from your car and mail it. The module is reset to factory values and shipped back to you. You install and plug in the module. No VIN programming is required because this is the same module as the car. You can find companies that offer this service online: Audi Airbag Module Repair Service on eBay.

In my case, there was a broken wire in the driver’s door which caused an open circuit and in turn caused air bag light to remain on.
