Kia – P0102 Code – Mass Airflow Sensor Replacement

When the P0102 fault code is present, the check engine light will stay on, and the engine may shake, not stay running, or accelerate. In addition, fuel economy will decrease. The P0102  fault code was caused by a faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. P0102 fault code means Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input.


This guide looks at fixing the P0102 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input fault code on a Kia. To fix this problem, follow step-by-step instructions on how to replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor.

Possible Causes

In addition to a faulty MAF sensor, other possible problems that can trigger P0102 on a Kia include:

  • Dirty MAF sensor
  • Clogged engine air filter
  • Mass airflow sensor harness is shorted or damaged
  • Poor ground connection
  • Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU)

What you will need

  • Kia Forte Mass Airflow Sensor
  • OBD-II Scanner
  • Mechanic Metric Toolset
    • 10mm Socket

Procedure

In this Kia, the P0102 fault code was triggered by a faulty MAF sensor. Let’s take a look at how to fix this issue.

  1. Connect the OBD-II scanner to the OBD-II port located under the dashboard.The OBD-II port of the Kia Forte.
  2. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to the accessories position. Dashboard lights will stay on, but do not start the engine. Inserting the key into the ignition switch.

  4. Check the stored codes; the scanner will show faulty P0102 Mass or Volume A Circuit Low.Checking the stored codes on the scanner.

  5. Pull the hood release under the dashboard and go to the front of the vehicle. The hood release of the Kia Forte.

  6. Press the tab to the left to unlock the hood latch. Then pull the hood up and set the hood rod to hold the hood open.Unlocking the hood latch of the Kia Forte.
  7. Locate the mass airflow sensor on the driver’s side of the engine compartment attached to the engine air filter housing.
  8. Pull the metal clips of the air filter housing to unlock it.Unlock the clips of the air filter housing.
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector of the mass airflow sensor by pressing the clip and pulling the connector out.Disconnecting the electrical connector of the mass airflow sensor.
  10. Loosen the 10mm bolt on the clamp of the air cleaner hose. Use a 10mm socket and turn it counterclockwise to loosen the clamp.Loosening the 10mm bolt on the clamp of the hose.
  11. Pull the top housing of the air filter up and pull it out from the hose that has a clamp.Pulling out the sensor and the air filter top housing.
  12. Remove the two 10mm bolts on the mass airflow sensor by turning them counterclockwise using a 10mm socket.Removing the two 10mm bolts on the mass air flow sensor.

  14. Line up the new mass air flow sensor into the top housing of the air filter and turn it to set it into place.The new or replacement mass air flow sensor of the Kia Forte.

  15. Reinstall the two 10mm bolts on the mass airflow sensor to lock it in position.Reinstalling the two 10mm bolts holding the mass air flow sensor.

  17. Place the top housing back into the air filter housing and push the clips in to lock it into place.Locking the clips on the air filter housing or air box.

  19. Tighten the 10mm bolt on the clamp by turning it clockwise using a 10mm socket.Tightening the 10mm bolt on the air hose clamp.
  20. Turn the ignition switch to the accessories position again.

  23. Start the vehicle a few times. Then check if the check engine light is still on and if the vehicle still has difficulties starting to reread the codes.Starting the vehicle to check the check engine light.
